If you’re ever considering what type of boiler you need, most people in Ireland will look towards gas or oil boilers. Electric boilers are a less well-known alternative, but there are several reasons why you might want to choose one.

Considering an Electric Boiler Dublin Residents Recommend ?

Usually considered as a last resort for people who cannot have a gas boiler installed (or don’t have access to the gas network), electric boilers provide a working solution for heating and hot water. In other cases, installing a gas boiler may be problematic – if the installation of a Gas Boiler requires extensive excavation work to reach the gas supply and your apartment needs to be turned upside down and torn apart in the process of connecting the boiler to the gas pipe, there will need to be a significant amount of unavoidable rebuilding work involved after the installation. Simply choosing an electric boiler for an apartment instead of a gas boiler could prevent this from happening.

The Difference Between Gas and Electric Boilers

Conventional boilers, those that use gas or oil, burn the fuel to generate heat. This heat is used to heat the water in the system to be used as needed. The only difference between conventional boilers and electric boilers is how the heat is generated – electric boilers simply use electricity to generate heat

If you’ve used electric space heaters before, you’ll recognise the concept, but may also be concerned about the efficiency and cost of installing an electric boiler.

Is it cheaper to heat with Gas or Electric Boilers?

The amount you pay for your energy use, whether it’s gas or electric, will depend entirely on your contract with your energy supplier which makes a direct cost comparison difficult. Even asking “how much do electric boilers cost to run?” can be a tricky question.

Over the last few years, the technology used within gas boilers has progressed at a rapid rate. Boilers from 20 years ago may have started their life at 85% efficiency, and as boilers age, the level of efficiency drops. Modern gas boilers can achieve over 90% efficiency – less than 10% of the energy used is wasted. This is an inevitable issue with gas boilers as they will never be 100% efficient.

How much electricity does an electric boiler use? The simple answer is all of it! Electric boilers are close to 100% efficient as they don’t rely on burning fossil fuels to create heat, and therefore there is no energy loss through by-products of the process (such as the generation of light from a flame).

This means that if over a certain period, you need to use 100kw of energy to heat your home with a gas boiler, an electric boiler may only need to use 90kw over the same period. In short, it means a reduction in the amount of energy you use, which should lower the overall amount you pay.

I called NRM last Friday afternoon and explained our water pump/pressure tank were not working and the shower and hot water taps had no water at all. I spoke with Killian and he arranged an appointment to sort it asap. He called later that afternoon and fixed the pump in no time and we arranged a second appointment to replace the tank.An engineer Bryan called this afternoon and replaced the pressure tank in no time and went out of his way to install an extra valve to make fixing the issue easier going forward. We couldn't be happier with the service we got from NRM. Will definitely be using their services again. Both lads were masked and obeyed social distancing at all times and I should mention that this was an emergency job as we had no hot water.

Superb work by Killian and his team. Provided excellent advice throughout the choosing of a boiler and installation of a Worcester Bosch Greenstar Lifestyle, rezoning of heating / water and installation of controls. Excellent workmanship by NRM and followed through on all their commitments - including spotting and fixing a leaking tap that was not part of the job. I have no hesitation recommending this trustworthy company based on my own experience and the peace of mind knowing that the installation was professionally completed. Well done.

Killian (manager/owner/engineer) is a straight-talker, honest & forthright: he provides the requisite information without any glossing over - an especially important quality when faced with major renovation decisions. He is also a very patient chap & an assured professional. Brian (our engineer) was kind, patient & most helpful. My concerns were not only alleviated (about our complicated heating 'system') but more significantly, I found myself able to rely on these chaps for our current & future needs.

How-Much-Can-I-Save-by-Getting-an-Oil-Boiler-Replacement

Your Electric Boiler Questions Answered !

Are Electric Boilers as Good as Gas?

Electric boilers are certainly more efficient than gas boilers, but is all-electric better than gas? There are other factors that can help you decide.

Electric boilers are compact and require less preparation for installation – they simply need connecting to your water system and the electric supply. If space is at a premium, an electric boiler could be the best choice. Because of their compact size and flexibility in connections, you may find you have more options for the installation location of an electric boiler in comparison to a gas boiler.

Electric radiators can also be installed to provide heat when you need it, replacing water-filled radiators. As with all things, technology has advanced, and modern electric radiators are an extremely efficient option. With standard radiators, heat will dissipate as the water travels through the pipes around your home – there’s no such issue with a fully electric system.

A further benefit is related to the operation of the internals of the boiler. Electric boilers don’t require as many moving parts as gas or oil boilers which means they require less maintenance. If there are fewer parts to break, there’s less chance of a breakdown!

The reduction in moving parts also reduces the level of noise the boiler generates. Modern gas boilers have reached a stage where they operate very quietly, but electric boilers can be even quieter. You’ll hear a gas boiler igniting, but an electric boiler doesn’t ignite – it just heats up.

Unlike gas and oil boilers, there is no need to install a flue and no chance of fuel leakage. This makes them safer to use with no risk of carbon monoxide leaks, and it can help with moving away from a reliance on fossil fuels. Electric boilers are more eco-friendly than their conventional counterparts but remember that electricity production may be based on burning fossil fuels.

Electricity production and supply is one final point to consider. If you have a gas boiler and experience a power cut, the boiler may continue working to provide heat for your home. However, an electric boiler will cease operation when the power is cut. While power cuts are not a common occurrence, it is something to consider, especially if you live in a remote area.

Are Electric Boilers the Future?

New legislation is being introduced that bans the installation of gas and oil boilers in newly built homes in the next few years. Electric boilers can make ideal replacements for these homes, but other options are available – solar energy, wind energy, and heat pumps are some of the popular alternatives.

While there are no plans to ban oil or gas boiler replacements in existing homes, should the time come, electric boilers would be a viable alternative that can simply slot into your existing heating system.

What Size Electric Boiler Do I Need?

The size of the electric boiler relates to the heating it produces rather than directly reflecting its physical size. Electric boilers are available in a range of sizes, and the size you need will be determined by the size of your home and your usage patterns.

The team at NRM Plumbing and Heating will be happy to advise on the appropriate electric boiler for your home. Simply get in touch and we’ll guide you through the process of choosing and installing an energy-efficient electric boiler.
