Attic Water Tank Installation Crumlin residents recommend

Imagine waking up in your home in Crumlin, turning on the tap, and being greeted with a steady flow of clean water—no spluttering, no sudden drops in pressure, and absolutely no leaks from above. That peace of mind comes from a properly installed attic water tank, and if you’re considering an upgrade, the modern slimline system offers top reliability for today’s properties.

Having fitted attic tanks throughout Crumlin, I can attest to the comfort and protection a good system brings. Let’s explore how to choose, install, and maintain a slimline attic water tank and pump system for your Crumlin property.

Why Upgrade to a Modern Slimline Attic Water Storage Tank?

If your home still uses an old metal or galvanised tank, you risk rust, leaks, and poor water quality. Many Crumlin homes still rely on these outdated systems, risking not only water quality but also potential property damage. Modern slimline tanks, made from high-quality MDPE or robust plastic, are specifically designed to suit compact attic areas, resist corrosion, and provide years of trouble-free service.

  • Improved water quality—no more rust or sediment
  • Better space utilisation with compact, rectangular design
  • Reduced risk of leaks and ceiling damage
  • Compliance with current building and insurance standards
  • Peace of mind with a hygienic, sealed system

If you’ve noticed damp patches on your ceiling, reduced water pressure, or discoloured water, it’s probably time to consider a replacement.

Attic Water Tank Replacement – Understanding Your New System in Crumlin

Today’s best setups use slimline tanks, solid bases, and professional copper pipework. The addition of a booster pump ensures excellent water pressure throughout the home—ideal for powerful showers and fast-filling baths, even in multi-storey properties.

  • Slimline Tank: Designed to fit in low or narrow attic spaces without sacrificing capacity, perfect for an attic tank replacement.
  • MDPE/Plastic Construction: Lightweight, durable, and immune to corrosion, making it ideal for a cold water storage tank.
  • Booster Pump integration: Increases water pressure for taps, showers, and appliances.
  • Insulated Base and Pipework: Protects against freezing and heat loss.
  • Secure Lid: Prevents debris, dust, and insects from contaminating your water supply.

Compared to old tanks, this arrangement offers much better reliability and efficiency.

Attic Cold Water Storage Tank – Choosing the Right Size and Features

Selecting the correct tank size is crucial for meeting your household’s water demands without wasting space or energy. Slimline attic tanks are available in a range of sizes, typically from 100 to 400 litres. Here’s a quick rough guide:

Household Size Recommended Tank Size
1–2 people 100–150L
3–4 people 150–250L
5+ people / large home 250–400L

Modern attic water tanks are equipped with tight-fitting lids to keep your water supply clean, built-in insulation to guard against heat loss and freezing, and are engineered for straightforward connection to booster pumps and Irish plumbing systems. Always ensure your chosen tank is certified for potable water use and fully compliant with Irish Water’s Code of Practice and current Building Regulations—this guarantees your tank meets the highest standards for safety, hygiene, and long-term reliability in Irish homes.

Replace An Attic Water Tank – Preparing for Installation: Safety, Support & Access

Proper preparation is key to a safe and long-lasting installation. Here’s what a professional will consider:

  • Support Platform: The tank must sit on a strong, level base—usually thick plywood or MDF over reinforced joists—to safely bear the weight of a full tank (100L = 100kg of water).
  • Clear Access: Ensure there’s enough space for the tank, pump, and all pipework, with easy access for future maintenance.
  • Pipe Routing: Plan for efficient, insulated runs to minimise heat loss and prevent freezing.
  • Electrical Supply: If installing a booster pump, a safe, dedicated power source is required.
  • Compliance: All work should meet current plumbing codes and insurance requirements.

Attempting a DIY installation can lead to leaks, structural damage, or even tank collapse—always trust a qualified plumber for this job.

Attic Tank Replacement – Step-by-Step Installation Process

Here’s how a professional approaches a modern attic water tank installation:

  1. Initial Assessment: Inspect attic space, measure access points, and confirm tank and pump sizing.
  2. Old Tank Removal: Drain and safely remove any existing tank, disposing of it in accordance with environmental regulations.
  3. Platform Preparation: Lay a reinforced, level base for the new tank and pump, ensuring stability and weight distribution.
  4. Tank Positioning: Carefully manoeuvre the slimline tank into place, checking all clearances.
  5. Pipework Installation: Connect copper or MDPE pipes for inlet, outlet, overflow, and vent. Integrate a booster pump if required, and ensure all joints are leak-free.
  6. Valve and Ballcock Fitting: Install a new ball valve, float, and isolation valves for easy future maintenance.
  7. Electrical Connection: Wire the pump to a safe, switched power supply, following all electrical safety standards.
  8. Insulation: Fit an insulated jacket around the tank and lag all exposed pipework.
  9. Testing: Fill the tank, check for leaks, test water pressure, and ensure the pump operates smoothly.
  10. Handover: Provide a demonstration, maintenance advice, and all relevant paperwork and warranties.

Tank In the Attic – Insulation, Covers, and Winter Protection

Crumlin winters can be harsh, and attic spaces are particularly vulnerable to freezing. Proper insulation is essential:

  • Wrap the tank in a purpose-made insulation jacket, secured with anti-rot string.
  • Lag all pipes, especially those running close to eaves or unheated spaces.
  • Fit a rigid, well-sealed lid to prevent dust, insects, and cold air from contaminating the water.

Good insulation not only prevents freezing but also maintains water quality and reduces energy costs.

Cost Breakdown and What’s Included

The typical cost for installing a modern slimline attic water tank in Crumlin ranges from €800+, depending on tank size, pump specification, and attic access. Here’s what’s generally included:

  • Supply of slimline tank (100–400L)
  • All fittings, valves, and pipework
  • Booster pump (if required)
  • Insulation jacket and pipe lagging
  • Removal and disposal of old tank

Professional installation pays off in reliability, safety, and long-term savings.

Maintenance Tips for Longevity and Water Quality

A well-installed attic water storage tank system requires minimal maintenance, but a few simple steps will keep it running smoothly for years:

  • Inspect the tank and pipes annually for leaks, rust, or insulation damage.
  • Clean the tank every 1–2 years to prevent sediment build-up.
  • Check the lid and insulation after storms or cold snaps.
  • Test the pump and valves periodically to ensure proper operation.
  • Keep the attic space clear of clutter that could disturb the tank or pipework.

If you notice any issues—strange noises, drops in pressure, or signs of water damage—contact your plumbing expert straight away for a prompt repair.

Read What Our Happy Clients Have To Say

We could not speak more highly of Killian and his team. They installed a completely new heating system for us and were extremely efficient throughout the process. Every evening they left our home spotless, and they managed our last-minute changes with ease. Thanks to their professionalism and hard work, we’re looking forward to a warm and cosy winter!
Have nothing but the highest of praise for Killian and the team at NRM Plumbing and Heating. Moved into our house just 10 months ago and noticed very quickly that the old oil-based heating system in it was costing us an arm and a leg. Decided to change to gas and went, on Killian’s advice, for a complete install of a new combi gas boiler, 10 new rads with TRVs, and new piping throughout (to replace the old gunbarrel piping). Phenomenal job done by Aido, Phil and Lar. Punctual, professional, reliable and an absolute pleasure to deal with. Entire job completed in 3 and a half days to a very high standard. Won’t look anywhere else for our plumbing and heading needs.
Switched from oil to gas boiler in Firhouse. Killian and the team did a fantastic job for installation. Very clean and professional work, pleasant to deal with as well.
Needed to get a pump on my water tank replaced. From initial enquiry to job completed in less than a week. Transparent quote provided before the work was done. Have used NRM before but not for a job this big. Great speedy friendly service. Highly recommend
NRM are the best. Killian, Adrian, Philip, Bryan and Reese did a full re plumb on my house. combi boiler, new tank, new pipes, radiators throughout. full bathroom and kitchen work. They are all very skilled and have pride in their work. Extremely professional and will do what's wright for you not what's easy for them.
I wanted to replace my old oil boiler with a new one, and also to have the fixtures on 6 radiators replaced with ones which would allow modern TRVs to be fitted.
Killian responded to my request within 24hrs and surveyed two days later with the quote arriving later that day. Once I accepted the quote he gave me a start time of two weeks. He met all the promised response times etc., and was very helpful and professional.
The lads who arrived on the agreed date, Adrian & Reece were a delight to work with. Clean, non-intrusive (as much as they could be), and just went about the business in hand. Everything was done and fully tested in a day.
That was back in July, and the system has only recently been used in earnest but has been faultless now for two months.
I would 100% recommend NRM on the basis of my dealing with them.
We required a full re-plumbing job which included switching from oil to gas. We were given NRM’s number by a friend who used them many times and vouched strongly for how good they are.

Kilian was incredibly efficient in getting back to my initial enquiry but what was most impressive was how, during the planning stage, he advised where the boiler, pipes etc should go to maximise heating efficiency within the house, without compromising on space, all within the budget we had.

Despite the size of the project, they made the whole process stress free.

Having done a number of renovations, I can say hand on heart that Kilian, Bryan, Adrian and the rest of the team at NRM were all very pleasant to deal with and excellent at what they do.

I was very pleased we went with NRM and would recommend them to anyone (which we have done many times already).
Highly recommend NRM, great communication and quick to get someone out to do the job. Bryan was very pleasant and did a great job. Much appreciated!
My girlfriend and I recently moved from Germany into our new home in Dublin and needed a reliable heating and plumbing company to replace our old boiler system. This company exceeded our expectations in every way. Their planner visited us within a day of contacting them and provided a detailed quote the following day. They started the job a week later, and their team impressively replaced our old boiler with a brand new combi-boiler in just one day. The after-care service has been amazing as well—they've been available almost immediately whenever we've needed them. For any plumbing and heating needs, we'll always turn to this company and highly recommend them to others.
Many thanks to Killian, Hayley, Bryan, Larry, Reese and Adrian who as a team gave an excellent service from initial consultation to job completion. Bryan and Larry collaborated to figure out the resolution of my messy pipe system and found a new way to sort a problem with minimum intrusion of the rerouted pipes. They were always on time, respectful, polite and listened to any concern that I raised. I would highly recommend NRM. Thanks to all especially Bryan and Larry.
